Researcher-in-Residence Programs

Dr. Will Thalheimer's Introduction

The Researcher-in-Residence program is a culmination of the work I have been doing since 1998 through my research/consulting practice Work-Learning Research. For more than eight years I have been compiling research on learning, memory, and instruction from the world’s preeminent refereed journals. More importantly, I’ve been translating those ideas into practical, workable recommendations by working with learning leaders, instructional designers, e-learning developers, and training professionals.

The Researcher in Residence program was born one day when I asked myself, “What aspects of my work have clients found particularly potent in improving their own practices?” The answer—a blinding flash of insight for me—was that instructional professionals valued (1) hearing about the learning research, (2) thinking about the research in the context of their own design-and-development projects, (3) wrangling with the delicate balance between research and practice, and (4) being challenged to expand and augment their current practices.

The Researcher-in-Residence program combines these things into a workable package. The two or three-day experience utilizes my background doing workshops, auditing learning programs, providing consulting, and being a learning developer and trainer myself—understanding deeply the practical constraints that underpin our work.
